Overview

The BESS Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of deliverables associated with Battery Energy Storage Projects taking clients from project conception, siting and permitting to turnkey design, construction, and startup. The renewables team focuses on renewable generation and battery storage in both the utility-scale market and the commercial/industrial market and offers a wide range of design and project execution experiences. Services include initial battery sizing, use case evaluation, and technology selection to full detailed design. Current projects range in size from 1MW to 500MW with interconnection voltages from 480V to 500kV and include both standalone battery storage and storage plus other renewables such as wind and solar. The position will be reporting directly to the Renewables Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities
    Design and engineer battery energy storage systems tailored to meet specific project requirements.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and site assessments to determine optimal locations and configurations for BESS installations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, project managers, and suppliers to ensure successful project execution.
  • Review utility interconnection documents like facility studies, interconnection agreements, or power purchase agreements and confirm the project design meets the requirements of those agreements.
  • Work with CAD designers to guide them through well designed site layouts and single line diagrams.
  • Conduct project detailed design and QA/QC reviews for completeness and accuracy of internal and external design documents that align with our customer requirements and industry best practice standards.
  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines (Civil/structural, telecom, transmission, etc.)
  • Contribute to the development of design standards, best practices, and documentation for BESS projects.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working renewable energy projects.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer's License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Direct experience designing utility-scale Battery Energy Storage projects.
  • Previous consulting engineering experience preferred.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Salary range for this position is $100,000- $150,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
