3rd Class Mechanic
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 3rd Class Mechanic to support docking operations at our site in Norfolk, VA. This position works 1st shift (Mon-Fri 6am-2:30pm).
Job Description:
  • Block and haul various vessels
  • Builds keel and bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring for supporting ships in dry dock, marine railways, shipways, or building docks, using woodworking hand and power tools.
  • Position and secure blocking in accordance to ship's blueprints.
  • Use centering chains, lasers, oil sticks, and magnetic tapes.
  • Identify various types of wood (Oak, Pine, Salt Treated, Composite, etc.)
  • Identify various types of ropes (Nylon, Samson, single braided, double braided, synthetic, manila etc.)
  • Line handling for dry docks, railways, and travelift.
  • Moor vessels using different types of mooring equipment (Cleats, bitts, bollard bitts, chocks, H bitt, etc.) with instruction
  • Tie different knots (Barge hitch, Tow bridal)
  • Qualified to operate the following equipment:
    • Drydock equipment (Capstan, grip hoist, flood valves, discharge valves)
    • Forklifts
    • Impact wrench
    • Nail gun
    • Come a long
  • Basic chainsaw operation (Startup, blade change, general maintenance)
  • Train in emergency procedures on drydocks, railways, and travel lift.
  • Successfully complete the maintenance tasks of dry docks and railways.
  • Locate Stern Reference Point (SRP).
  • Introductory Blueprint reading.
  • Rigging duties.
  • Train in guiding Travel lift on and off pier as well as grade beams.
  • Act as deckhand and assist in hooking up tugs to vessels.
  • Identify all piers and berthing locations within shipyard.
  • Adhere to safety policies and wear personal protective equipment including: hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three (3) years of maritime experience in a trade.
  • Must be proficient with hand/power tools.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to understand and act upon instruction.
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior shipyard and/or docking experience preferred.
  • Carpentry experience preferred.
  • Technical training preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
